John received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Covenant College in 1999 and a Master of Science in Counseling from Capella University in 2015. John has been with Therapeutic Treatment Center, LLC since May 2017. John is a Certified Advance Alcohol and Drug Counselor through the Virginia Certification Board and is a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor through the Virginia Board of Counseling.  John is also ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) Certified, using enhanced multidimensional assessments to develop patient-centered service plans to guide clinicians, counselors, and care managers in making decisions about patient admissions, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for various levels of care for addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.

John has provided mentoring and counseling for children, adolescents, and adult populations for over 14 years.  He has also provided these services to children in the foster care system. It was in 2004, as a corporate representative for The Howard University School of Business 21th Century Advantage Program that he became interested in, supporting and helping young adults develop skill sets and cross-functional thinking essential for professional development.  He also became equally interested in aiding in the coping skill and overall personal development for these young adults who faced many challenges.   In 2016, John was selected by the Virginia State University College of Education, Department of School and Community Counseling to provide the initial address and to facilitate the panel discussion at Virginia State University for “A Celebration of Me II” Female-Only Empowerment Conference of 130 adolescent girls, teachers, community advocates, and school counselors from six (6) school districts.

John is a highly skilled trauma specialist trained and certified in multiple facets of Trauma-Informed Care. He is experienced in implementing behavioral interventions from a variety of theoretical perspectives with individuals and families.  He is knowledgeable about trauma and its impact on human behavior and physiology. Mr. Weaver has worked with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma, substance abuse, and chronic mental illness. He is also experienced in crisis management.  He is an experienced Trauma & Resilience Trainer and a Trauma Informed Peer Support Trainer. He is also an experienced Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor with exceptional group facilitation skills. Additionally, as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, he is passionate about helping others to make positive and enduring changes in their lives.

John is a member of the American Counseling Association and a member of the International Association for Trauma Professions. He specializes in working with adolescents and adults with post-traumatic stress, trauma, substance use issues and co-occurring disorders of depression, anxiety, and family related issues. John is eclectic and uses a blend of Cognitive Behavioral, Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered, Reality Based, and Solution Focused approaches to treatment.  John believes that a holistic approach and psycho-education are keys to healing, behavior modification, and one’s ability to maintain and sustain the changes that they have made.

John has a zeal for helping others. His use of an integrative and holistic approach helps each client build upon their unique and individualized strengths, rather than solely focusing on the presenting problem. John is an advocate for his clients and he approaches each client with openness, acceptance, respect, and honesty.
